A pop without going over the top—that’s the essence of a good fall transitional lip. I’ve written enough beauty copy over 15+ years to know the content will be heavy on the smooth, ā€œreturn to glamourā€ hair and the evergreen fall favorite, the bold lip this September. And it’ll be heavy on those things for a reason! They’re classics, they’re beautiful, they never go out of style. They were ā€œtrendsā€ I looked forward to reading and re-reading about in my September issues in the ā€˜90s and early 2000s. Today, though? I know enough to know an opaque, bold lip is never going to be my thing, just like any jewelry that isn’t microscopic isn’t, nor is massively high heels.

While a luxe tinted balm serves me well three seasons of the year (spring, fall, winter), I need a little less moisture in the fall (though I still need some), plus a more vibrant hue with a bit of staying power. Here, my favorite fall lip formulas I reach for again and again.

  1. Violette FR Bisou Balm Yes, balm is in the title, but this is a special take on a balm. In fact, it’s barely like a balm, in my humble opinion, to quote Angela Chase’s mom on My So-Called Life. It leaves a sheer tint that looks like your lips but better—a sort of movie lips effect. The finish is clean—not glossy or creamy in the least. It’s a feat. Amour Fou is my shade, but I also love to pair a more dramatic eye with Calisson. I also haven’t ordered Sucette yet, but it’s on my wish list. I’m beyond impressed by this brand, which produces incredibly innovative products.
