(⺣◡⺣) Do you really need YSL Lash Clash Mascara?
My unfiltered thoughts
Hi! How was your weekend?
Before we get into all things lashes, let’s get into a few other things up top.
Here’s a little snippet of my media diet the past few days:
I loved this Substack about the ageism we deal with in media and copywriting, Julia Casella’s Korean beauty trip highlights, and this newsletter about having an analog fall. Amy Smilovic convinced me a few years ago to buy this top that’s been a true wardrobe workhourse. The cost per wear is probably pennies at this point. And now, she’s slowly convincing me I need this skirt. I plan to enjoy my own analog fall (to a point, let’s be real — I’m very online) in this reversible jacket until it gets too cold. I also watched Weapons and I Like Me (the John Candy documentary) this weekend and liked both. Last but definitely not least, I can’t wait for Jane Pratt’s memoir.
My to-do list this week includes:
Heading into the city on Wednesday for two events
Working on Yahoo gift guides and Seattle Times stories
Reworking home page and bio copy for a new author/academia client
Taking so many Substack 50-minute one-stop-shop meetings with founders and beauty brands. If you’re interested for yourself or for a brand, send me an email: amber@rouge18.com
Stalking this patio set’s life on the boardwalk (I will never not make that Jersey Shore-tinged joke that’s 15 years old), waiting for the price to go even lower as Hammacher Schlemmer is, sadly, going out of business.
Working on my Substack for next week about the $16 blush that’s replaced my Rhode Pocket Blush (though not in Toasted Teddy — that’s still a staple for bronzing

For a month, I was dazzled by YSL’s Lash Clash Mascara. You know the one. That gorgeous gold tube that makes you feel like you’re doing something luxurious every single morning, even if you’re just putting on makeup to go to Target. The formula is beautiful, the brush is perfection, and it genuinely made my lashes look incredible. I’ve been taking a Lashify lash extensions break (too expensive for now, and alas, my eyes are just a bit sensitive for cheaper alts in terms of the lashes themselves and the glue) and usually, there’s a bumpy return to mascara where I feel as if I look like a man for at least a week. Not so with this formula! Which is saying a LOT.
But here’s the thing: I’m not repurchasing it. Even though it is on sale at Macy’s.
I know, I know. Plot twist of the century, right? Let me explain.
A few weeks ago, I was sent a PR sample of a new drugstore mascara. This brand has a great track record, but it’s been over a decade since I considered it for mascara specifically. I wasn’t expecting much—just another decent drugstore option to keep in rotation. But then I put it on.
Does it replace my YSL entirely? Read on and find out.
