For winter, my home scent concept is all about conjuring the fragrance of two things I desperately want but distinctly lack—a fireplace and a Christmas tree.
Fireplace
The first one is a byproduct of living in New York City apartments, in which working fireplaces are a rare luxury, like in-unit laundry or some other pipe dream thing like an extra bedroom. Imagine the splendor, etc.
I grew up with a fireplace that was active throughout the fall and winter and so I associate home/coziness/extreme hygge with a smoky, fireplace smell. And I have a favorite candle I buy every year that is a stunt double for that exact olfactory moment.
